Sancti Spiritus province

Sancti Spiritus Province

Founded by Diego Velázquez in 1514, situated in the center of the country is the province of Sancti Spíritus. Established between the territories of Omofay and Magón, in one of the banks of the Yayabo River, it is today a beautiful city situated 386 km from the Cuban capital.

Sancti Spíritus breathes authenticity in each one of its corners. A valuable urban historic center, declared a national monument, denoting centuries of treasured tradition in ample houses, churches, museums, old streets and walls which invite the visitor to know up close customs and way of life. Likewise, it shows important pages of the life of illustrious people of national history such as Serafín Sanchéz, Ernesto Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, the latter been vinculated to the sentiment of the population of Yaguajay.

Topes de Collantes

To remain in Sancti Spíritus without knowing the Zaza Dam, the biggest reservoir of fresh water in Latin America, and without knowing the Negro River in the zone of Hanabanilla and Topes de Collantes where nature and man achieved a harmony in order to favor health, is to leave behind more than a motive to enjoy a full stay in an area where there are offers of entertainment and caters to the taste of the most varied preferences and age groups. One of the most liked has to do with music as the land of Yayabo as well as what is known of this province, is the capital of Trova (troubadour music). Even now the songs resound in the balconies of women loved (serenades) with the echo of the letters of Rafael Gómez (also known as Teofilito), Sindo Garay, Pepe Sánchez, Miguel Matamoros and Manuel Corona.

Close to Sancti Spíritus, is situated the museum city of Cuba: Trinidad. UNESCO declared Trinidad a World Heritage Site for its preserved historical-cultural patrimony. The large city, the impressive pebbled streets that lead to beautiful plazas and small squares, surrounded by majestic buildings, many of them converted into important museums, is a challenge to the visitor.

An extensive territory, named since the XIX century as the Valle de los Ingenios (Sugarmills Valley), as well as a World Heritage Site, which had more than sixty sugar mills. This completes the historical-cultural scene which left distinct marks in time.

Nature

Nature lovers can choose in this territory from multiple attractions. The National Caguanes Park and Caballete de Casa, in the region of Escambray, as well as Cayo Piedra, demonstrates the power of nature in front of the curios eyes of the individual. The Boquerones zone impresses because of its beautiful landscapes of its special lushness and prolific vegetation.
